LEXINGTON — Almost 10 months after he announced plans to transfer from Auburn to Kentucky, quarterback Joey Gatewood is still awaiting word as to whether he will be able to play for the Wildcats in 2020.
Here is a closer look at what we know about the status of Gatewood's application for a transfer waiver that would allow him to play this season instead of sitting out a year.
Why did Joey Gatewood transfer?
A former top-50 recruit, Gatewood was unable to win the starting quarterback job in two seasons at Auburn.
With NFL draft prospect Jarrett Stidham entrenched as the Tigers' starting quarterback in 2018, Gatewood redshirted in his first season on campus, making only a cameo appearance in the Music City Bowl with 28 rushing yards on three carries.
