UK battling with moonshiner over rights to ‘Kentucky’

Colin Fultz is a legal moonshiner – and a candidate in a state representative race – in eastern Kentucky and is in the midst of a legal battle with UK over the use of the state name in his distillery. The New York Times recently chronicled the battle; the school has a trademark on the state’s name and that is the gist of the battle with Fultz. Fultz sells Kentucky Mist Moonshine

” ‘Kentucky’ is our issue — not the mist or the moonshine,” said Jason Schlafer, the university’s executive associate athletic director, who oversees marketing and licensing for the department.
