After pulling off one double-digit comeback in the Final Four, it looked as if San Diego State was on the verge of another Monday against UConn in the national championship. However, the Huskies managed to fend off a late run from the Aztecs and pull away for a dominant 76-59 win to claim the fifth national championship in school history.
After entering halftime up 12 points, UConn held SDSU at arm’s length for the majority of the second half before allowing hope at a comeback. The Aztecs found themselves down as many as 15 but battling back to cut the deficit to six with 7:37 remaining on a bucket from Darrion Trammel as part of a 12-3 run.
