Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, this weekend would have marked the running of the 146th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
More specifically, today – May 1 – was scheduled for the Kentucky Oaks where the three-year-old thoroughbred fillies compete in the 1 1/8-mile race for the garland of lilies.
Instead, we now must wait for September 4 and 5 for arguably the most exciting weekend of the year for Kentuckians.
While we wait for Derby weekend, we will, however, see Spring Meet return at Churchill Downs starting May 16.
On Thursday afternoon, the track announced that starting in two weeks, races will run Thursdays through Sundays spectator-free.
