Signs things might not be going well for your football program: trees are growing wild in the stands of your empty stadium. That’s exactly what’s happening at New Mexico State.
In the upper deck of Aggie Memorial Stadium you will find a palm tree standing almost two feet tall. The sapling sprouted through the west end of the stands unabated. Built in 1978, the stadium can hold around 30,000 people when full, a recent rarity for the program in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Some might consider it embarrassing. Instead of being laughed at, the New Mexico State administration is laughing with the joke.
