On Saturday, June 6, American Pharoah accomplished something that we haven’t seen since 1978. The horse won the Belmont Stakes after winning the Preakness Stakes after winning the Kentucky Derby. For the first time since Affirmed nearly 40 years ago, a horse won the Triple Crown. If it’s not basketball or bourbon, horse racing is at the heart of what makes Kentucky special and to see a horse from the Commonwealth end the drought, it was truly special. And it reminds us why we watch sports: to see something special, to be a part of history.
We all have our favorite teams and our favorite players, but there’s something to be said about witnessing history.
