The football community has lost one of its best. Steve Ortmayer, a 40+ year coaching veteran that won two Super Bowls and finished his career coaching for Rich Brooks at the University of Kentucky, died on Tuesday. He was 77.
Ortmayer was Brooks’ righthand man in Lexington, serving as the assistant head coach and coaching special teams and tight ends throughout the seven-season run that included four consecutive bowl appearances, winning three of those postseason games. In addition to the big wins, like the 2007 victories over Louisville and No. 1 LSU, Ortmayer produced pros, most notably UK Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion, Jacob Tamme.
