The University of Louisville sought permission from its archrival to speak with Kenny Payne about its men's basketball coaching job, a source with knowledge of the interview process confirmed to Courier Journal late Saturday.
Payne, the top assistant for Kentucky coach John Calipari, was a first-round NBA draft pick and a freshman reserve on Louisville's 1986 national championship team. He played four seasons for the Cardinals and was their second-leading scorer for the 1988-89 campaign.
