With 14 seconds remaining in the FIBA U19 World Cup gold medal game on July 28, 2019, Team USA trailed Australia by three points. Australia had the ball, and things looked bleak for the United States.
But Rhyne Howard — now a star for Kentucky — was elbowed in the face, suffering a bloody nose, and Australia was whistled for a foul. Unable to shoot the free throws, Howard’s USA teammate, Caitlin Clark — now a star for Iowa — took them in her place. Clark hit one foul shot, USA then tied the game, and eventually won in overtime.
