Do you smell that? It’s the familiar scent of burning charcoal (and some of that Canadian smoke) as backyard cookouts and lake getaways ramp up in the middle of summer. This weekend, America will celebrate its birthday as early 4th of July celebrations begin nationwide, from the mountains to the prairies to the oceans white with foam.

In Kentucky, proud Americans will have several birthday party options from now through the 4th, ranging from parades, concerts, and festivals to boating, swimming, and the longtime tradition of igniting fireworks. My neighbors love the latter so much they shoot fireworks on July 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, too.
