NCAA’s Mark Emmert: “If a school doesn’t reopen, then they’re not going to be playing sports. It’s really that simple.”

Despite optimism in recent days that athletes could potentially return to campus this fall to play football even if classes are online-only, NCAA President Mark Emmert poured some cold water on that possibility Friday.

“We would much rather relax some of those competitive-equity issues than ever put a young man or young woman at risk, physically or mentally,” Emmert said during a live conversation on the NCAA’s Twitter channel, via USA Today.

On Thursday, Stadium broke the news that various conference commissioners supported the idea of athletes playing football this fall, despite the possibility of online-only classes.
