Late last month, states across the country began proposing and signing bills allowing college student-athletes to earn money off their names, images, and likenesses at various points in the near future.
In response, the NCAA is set to meet in Atlanta today for their first formal discussion on the matter, with the possibility of modifying their current rules on the table.
According to a report by ESPN, the NCAA’s policy prohibiting student-athletes from collecting money off endorsements, along with various other opportunities to profit off of their names, images, and likenesses is “under increasing pressure.”
This is the first official gathering of the NCAA board of governors since California passed a law that will make it illegal for schools in the state to punish athletes for accepting endorsement money starting in 2023.
