NCAA cancels basketball academies as NABC moves to extend recruiting dead period

College basketball recruiting is entering unfamiliar territory. Thanks to the coronavirus, coaches must find alternatives to in-person evaluations.

Tuesday afternoon the NCAA announced the cancellation of four regional basketball academies across the country. Established last summer, the camps were designed by the NCAA to give the organization more control over the evaluation process by taking power away from shoe company-sponsored grassroots AAU events.

All AAU and travel basketball circuits were canceled this spring. Currently in the middle of a recruiting dead period until May 31, the NABC recommended extending the deadline to July 31. The Division I Council will review the matter later this month.
