NCAA cancels all fall sports championships in 2020, may attempt to play them in spring

There will be no NCAA championships this fall, NCAA president Mark Emmert announced Thursday evening amid COVID-19 concerns.

"We cannot now, at this point, have fall NCAA championships, because there are not enough teams participating," Emmert said. "The board of governors said if you don't have half of the schools playing a sport you can't have a legitimate championship. ... Sadly, tragically that's going to be the case this fall. A full stop."

It is important to note that the decision Emmert announced does not impact football. College football is not governed by the NCAA so it can continue to have a College Football Playoff if it chooses to.
