LEXINGTON, Ky. – It started with confusion.
With a Jamar and a Jamal both on the same youth basketball team, players had trouble understanding who their coach was yelling for. Something had to change.
Jamar needed a nickname. His father was called Bookie. Switch one letter, and you get Boogie.
And as simple as that 8-year-old Jamar Watson had become “Boogie” Watson. The name stuck throughout middle school and into high school. Even as it became clear Watson’s future would center on the football field instead of the basketball court, Boogie remained.
