KSR Football Glossary: Get to Know the 4-2-5

With the advent of the spread offense, compulsorily defensive evolution has accompanied. From Jerry Claiborne’s Wide Tackle-6 through today’s world of sub-packages, by necessity, defenses are reinventing themselves on an annual basis. Today’s game forces the defense to defend the entire width of the football field as opposing offenses play at breakneck speed.

Kentucky’s first two opponents are Southern Miss and Florida. In certain situations, or continuously, both will counter UK’s three receiver formations with a 4-2-5 defense or variation thereof. Let’s take a look at this defensive scheme:

Remember from KSR Football Glossary posts, defenses are numerically identified as such: The first digit is the number of defensive linemen (4), the second being number of linebackers (2), and in the case of the specialization of the 4-2-5, the third refers to the figure of defensive backs (5).
