Former Kentucky lineman Bob Gain, a football star under Bear Bryant who is one of the best players in school history, has died at age 87. Gain died Monday in Willoughby, Ohio, the school announced Wednesday.
Originally from Weirton, W. Va., Gain played for Kentucky from 1947-50. He became the first SEC player to win the Outland Trophy, presented to the best interior lineman in college football, and twice was a first-team All-America selection.
His career included the first three bowl appearances in Kentucky history: the Great Lakes Bowl following the 1947 season, the Orange Bowl after the 1949 season and the Sugar Bowl after the 1950 season.
