Kentucky Wildcats guard Malik Monk was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week today following his brilliant breakout performance versus Michigan State and a blowout win over Duquesne. After spotty shooting to begin his career in two games at historic Rupp Arena, Monk was sensational in Madison Square Garden for the Champions Classic, scoring a career-high 23 points on a sizzling 7-11 3-point shooting, along with a career-high 6 rebounds, to lead the Cats over 13th-ranked Michigan State.
Monk followed up on that performance, though sidelined much of the first half in foul trouble, and
sparked the Cats early against Duquesne, scoring 7 of the team’s first 11 on 3-5 shooting on his way to 14 points.
