How abandoning reliance on freshmen helped John Calipari revamp Kentucky basketball

LEXINGTON – Perhaps the most important bit of history in Kentucky basketball’s blowout win at No. 5 Kansas Saturday was the one that escaped notice.

Yes, Kentucky recorded its biggest margin of victory against a top-five ranked team on the road in program history. Yes, the Wildcats won in Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since 1983. Yes, junior forward Keion Brooks scored a career-high 27 points.

But it was another stat that offers the best glimpse at what makes this Kentucky team special compared to its recent past.

For the first time in John Calipari’s 13 seasons as Kentucky’s coach only one freshman appeared in a game for the Wildcats.
