LEXINGTON - As Kentucky football opens preseason camp, coach Mark Stoops and defensive coordinator Brad White are still not sure how many players will be competing to replace Josh Allen as "Jack" linebacker.

Florida State transfer Xavier Peters might jump to the top of the competition if eligible, but he is still awaiting word from the NCAA if it will approve his waiver to play this fall.

Peters finalized his appeal letter Thursday and hopes for an answer in the next couple of weeks, but he and UK coaches have little indication of how quickly the NCAA might respond to the request.
