Ex-Kentucky basketball staffer, football player indicted on charges he defrauded athletes

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former University of Kentucky assistant athletic director Leon A. Smith was indicted by a federal grand jury last week for defrauding professional athletes of more than $1.2 million.

Smith, a Louisville native who played football for UK in the mid-1990s, served as director of men's basketball operations and was an assistant athletic director from 2006-09, faces felony charges of fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft.

If found guilty of all charges, Smith could face more than 30 years in prison.
