Walt Wells came away empty-handed in his head coaching debut at Eastern Kentucky, as the Colonels suffered a 59-0 beatdown at Marshall to open the season.
Coming in as 24.5-point underdogs, Marshall nearly covered the spread by the end of the first quarter, leading the Colonels 21-0 after 15 minutes of play. The Herd beat that spread just a few minutes later on a two-yard touchdown pass with 10:02 to go in the second quarter. They’d ultimately lead 38-0 at the half with 392 total yards compared to just 61 total for the Colonels.
Overall, EKU finished the day with an abysmal 166 total yards, including just 80 through the air.
