Earlier today, news broke that Shaka Smart is leaving Texas for Marquette. The Longhorns reportedly have a replacement in mind, and it is not John Calipari.
Chip Brown of Horns 247 is hearing that Texas Tech’s Chris Beard is the leading candidate for the job. Beard graduated from Texas and worked under former coach Tom Penders as a student assistant in the early 1990s. Beard has been at Texas Tech the last five years, taking the Red Raiders to the Elite Eight in 2018 and the national championship game in 2019. Add the twist of the knife of stealing your rival’s coach to his background and proven track record and that’d be a great hire.
