The University of Akron softball team split a doubleheader on the first day of the Furman/Upstate Tournament on Friday in Greenville, S.C.
The Zips (1-1) lost to Savannah State 6-3 in the first game and defeated Furman 3-0 in the second game.
Anna Tarpley hit a two-run double and Caitlin Gambone had an RBI single to lead the Zips in the opener.
Starting pitcher Nicole Best allowed three runs on two hits through 1u2153 innings and took the loss.
Kelly Hysong drove in two runs, Savannah Fruin hit a solo home run and Erin Seiler pitched a complete-game shutout for her first win of the season to lead the Zips in the nightcap.
