Kent State’s Danniel Thomas won the Division I national title in the women’s shot put at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., late Thursday night to become the first female national champion in school history.
A graduate student from Jamaica, Thomas threw a career-best 62-feet-10, which was more than two feet better than her previous best mark. All six of Thomas’ throws Thursday would have won her the national crown.
Thomas’ winning throw is the second-best collegiate mark ever, an NCAA outdoor record, a Jamaican national record and a Kent State record.
Thomas will compete for another national title in Saturday’s discus finals.
