Behind close wins at 157, 184 and heavyweight, Gardner-Webb edged Kent State 22-17 Friday night in the program's first dual at the Kent State Field House. The Golden Flashes won the first three matches, before dropping five straight.
Hometown freshman Cory Simpson hit a six-point move on the edge of the mat in the first period, sparking a 14-6 major decision.
"Cory wrestled really well today," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "He fought hard."
Sophomore Anthony Tutolo followed with five takedowns in a 13-5 major decision over Philip Anderson at 133.
