It isn't always articulated, but the College Football Playoff selection committee prioritizes the value of each team's wins over the value of its losses. Ohio State earned a lot of credit in the final rankings last season after an impressive and dominant run of victories down the stretch, and the Buckeyes' loss to an otherwise unimpressive Virginia Tech team earlier in the season was largely dismissed. Alabama's current No. 2 ranking is rooted in the same logic -- a strong win over a very good LSU team last weekend far outweighs its loss to now-unranked Ole Miss back in September.
