Longtime broadcaster, community activist Bob Fidler, 74, dies

A student’s passion for broadcasting trumped good marks if Bob Fidler was teaching class.

That particular memory is something Steve Physioc treasured throughout his career. The Kansas City Royals broadcaster shared those thoughts after learning that Fidler, 74, died suddenly Tuesday at his Topeka home.

“He just cared about students and put them first,’’ Physioc said. “My grades weren’t always the best, but I had the most passion about broadcasting. I remember one class, a radio lab, and Bob said, ‘You guys can broadcast games, but you have to go out and raise advertising money.
