Local sports briefs for June 27: K-State alum wins third straight high jump title in U.S. Championships

Former Kansas State athlete Erik Kynard won his third consecutive high jump title at the USA Track and Field Championships on Friday in Eugene, Ore.

Kynard won the event with a jump of 7 feet 91/4 inches. He will be competing in the IAAF World Championships in August in Beijing, China.

On Saturday, Kansas standout Michael Stigler narrowly missed qualifying for the World Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. Stigler, who was seeded third entering the finals, ran a 48.96 to finish fourth. He needed to place third or better to qualify for worlds.

Former Jayhawk Kyle Clemons finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, which is good enough to put his name into the 1,600-meter relay pool that will compete at worlds Clemons ran 45.
