Local sports briefs for June 17: K-State's Jones named USTFCCA field athlete of the year

A week after earning the first national title since 2011 for the Kansas State women’s track & field team, Akela Jones was named the USTFCCA field athlete of the year on Wednesday.

Jones was victorious in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, scoring 6,371 points, just 19 points shy of the NCAA record. She broke the national record for her home country of Barbados with one event to go in the competition.

ESU ADDS 30 TO TRACK & FIELD PROGRAM:Emporia State’s track & field coach Steve Blocker announced the addition of 30 student-athletes that will compete on the Hornets’ track team next season.
