Local sports briefs for April 26: WU baseball draws Western in MIAA Tournament

The Washburn baseball team earned the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament and will play a best-of-three, first-round series at No. 4 seed Missouri Western, the conference announced Sunday. The series starts Thursday at Western’s Griffon Field in St. Joseph, Mo.

Washburn enters 30-19 overall and 22-14 in the MIAA while Western is 29-19 and 22-14 in the conference. The teams split a four-game series early in the season in Topeka.

The winner of the first-round series will move on to the tournament semifinals at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., May 7-9.

WU SOFTBALL SWEPT AT NORTHWEST MISSOURI: The Washburn softball team was swept at Northwest Missouri on Sunday, wrapping up the regular season with losses of 3-2 and 7-4.
