EUGENE, Ore. — Erik Kynard is one of only seven American high jumpers ever to clear 7 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
On Sunday at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials at Hayward Field, it was good enough that he was the only competitor to clear 7-6, even if he wasn’t pleased with his performance.
Kynard won his third U.S. outdoor title in rainy conditions to clinch his second trip to the Olympics after winning the silver medal in London in 2012.
Joining Kynard in Rio will be Texas Tech’s Bradley Adkins, who finished third in 7-3, and sixth-place Ricky Robertson, who jumped 7-3.
