After nearly breaking the NCAA pentathlon record at last weekend’s DeLoss Dodds Invitational, Kansas State’s Akela Jones was honored with her second USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week award this season, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The Wildcat senior came just 35 points shy of the record with 4,643 total points in the meet’s pentathlon. The record of 4,678 was set during last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships by Georgia’s Kendell Williams.
Originally from St. Michael, Barbados, Jones started the event with first-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.25) and then high jump (1.85m/6-00.75) to bring her total score to 2,114 points through the first two events of the pentathlon.
