An ice storm warning is in effect in the area, and weather experts are advising eastern Kansas residents to prepare for power outages and avoid driving starting tonight.
Mary Knapp, climatologist at K-State, said a light freezing rain is expected overnight Friday. While that won’t be a lot of rain to accumulate as ice, she said it doesn’t take much precipitation to create traffic problems. The temperatures are expected to gradually get warmer over the weekend, but a cold front overnight Friday will freeze the surface of roads, and when the rain or freezing rain hits the ground, it will freeze on contact, Knapp said.
