Sean Austin Thomas Newlan (b. Dec. 20, 1994) is a former walk-on who has played in 39 career games, contributing on special teams while adding depth in the defensive backfield.
He will continue special teams support while competing for more playing time (and quite possibly a starting role) at safety.
Newlan is my favorite under-the-radar recruit from the Class of 2013. Originally slated to grayshirt, he was called up to the big leagues that summer to help fill out the class.
Newlan redshirted in 2013, even though he probably could have played at safety, and contributed on special teams in 2014, when he appeared in all 13 games and recorded six tackles, including five on kickoff coverage.
