We're less than 24 hours out from National Signing Day, which means that head coach Bill Snyder and the Kansas State Wildcats are tripling down on their recruiting efforts to finish off the 2016 cycle with a bang. With that in mind, we're here to provide the latest Kansas State recruiting news from the afternoon/evening of January 2nd.
Banks Transfers
Quarterback Jonathan Banks, a former JUCO transfer, came to Kansas State last year in hopes that he'd make an impact in the team's training camp QB competition.
It didn't work out as planned, as Banks came out of camp as a fourth-stringer and ultimately used a redshirt year to keep a season's worth of eligibility. More Kansas State football recruiting news inside our Chat Sports Android and iPhone apps!
Now, Banks is headed out of town -- announcing his intent to transfer from the program on Twitter Tuesday morning.
Banks would have been embroiled in yet another crowded quarterback competition this offseason, with no guarantee that he'd make a significant climb up the depth chart without an outstanding camp performance.
McCoy To Sign With K-State
Three-star Topeka High running back Mike McCoy was courted by Louisville, Arkansas, and South Dakota State this recruiting cycle, but his final decision ultimately came down to two in-state schools: Kansas and Kansas State.
After an eye-opening visit to Manhattan this past weekend, McCoy made up his mind -- officially committing to K-State on Monday.
“It was kind of tough because I really didn’t know what team I would pick or what was the best for me,” McCoy said, via the Topeka Capital-Journal. “But after my official visit at K-State I just really fell in love with the facilities, and the coaches and players are real nice. It just felt like a family already.” Get the latest on McCoy's commitment inside our Chat Sports Android and iPhone apps!
An All-6A running back, McCoy rushed for 1,496 yards and 24 touchdowns during his senior season. He finished his Topeka High career with 2,589 total yards and 45 touchdowns.
Class Overview
The Wildcats head into Signing Day with a similar class to many recent ones under head coach Bill Snyder -- solid across the board, sacrificing flash for program fits and balance.
As of Tuesday evening, Kansas State has 19 commits in total -- 12 on offense and 7 on defense. Dual-threat quarterback Skylar Thompson headlines Snyder's list of 15 three-star commits. Currently enrolled, Thompson's speed on the edge and evolving skill set as a traditional passer has many around Manhattan dubbing him as the programs' future at quarterback.
It's been a trying recruiting cycle altogether, though, as K-State lost three oral commits who decided to re-open their recruitment processes and look elsewhere. The Wildcats currently have the #70 overall class in the nation (per 247Sports), and the #9 class in the Big 12.
One big bright spot, though, is the transfer of Cal cornerback Cedric Dozier who will be eligible to practice/play immediately as a senior graduate transfer.
