The Kansas State Wildcats are hoping to return to the top of the Big 12 in 2015, but have several questions that need to be answered heading into the season. Here are three things we've already learned about them so far in fall camp:
QB battle still up for grabs
Joe Hubener, Jesse Ertz, Alex Delton, and junior college transfer Jonathan Banks are all battling for the starting QB job for the Wildcats, but no one has grabbed the upper hand.
"It hasn't changed," head coach Bill Snyder said. "We're trying to give some balance in the repetitions that each one of them takes and try define it in such way that we get to see all of them in a certain environment — all of them with the No. 1s, all of them with the No. 2s, all of them doing some of the same things so we can assess who's good at what and who's got some growth in certain areas."
Offense still a work in progress
Kansas State's offense was pretty well off in 2014 with Jake Waters under center with Tyler Lockett and Curry Sexton on the outside, but that isn't the case this year. Because of the lack of proven players, K-State co-offensive coordinator Dana Dimel said this year's still still hasn't found an identity.
“Tyler and Curry were such good receivers, but it’s been the personality of our offense that whatever you’re going to give us, we’re going to take. Last year, we decided that we were going to throw the ball. I know K-State has been known as a running team, but we didn’t have to run the ball. When you go back and look at it, there weren’t any games that we didn’t win because we didn’t run the football.
“I’m still evaluating it everyday, what our offense will be like and what will be our strengths and weaknesses, but it won’t be the same as last year’s offense for sure because we lost Jake, Tyler and Curry. We wanted to throw the ball with those guys, so this year we could end up being more of a running football team.”
Kyle Klein impressing Bill Snyder
While Deante Burton and Kody Cook are Kansas State's leading returning receivers, head coach Bill Snyder is most impressed with another member of the receiving core.
“I was so impressed with Kyle Klein,” Snyder said. “He had a very fine spring and really came around quite well. Nothing has slowed him down yet so far. I have seen the carry over. Everybody was here during the summer, but after when everybody had that little summer break, I would look out there and his brother would be throwing to him. He has invested in it and is doing well.”
