LAWRENCE – Montell Cozart will be Kansas’ starting quarterback when the Jayhawks open the season against South Dakota State on Sept. 5, KU coach David Beaty announced Monday.
Beaty said Cozart, a junior, had been the No. 1 quarterback throughout preseason camp and the choice crystallized after a team scrimmage on Saturday. Cozart had been pushed by juco transfer Deondre Ford while true freshmen Ryan Willis and Carter Stanley were also considered.
Cozart, a graduate of Bishop Miege, began last season as the starting quarterback before losing the job to Michael Cummings, who suffered a likely season-ending knee injury during the spring.
