Local sports briefs for Aug. 23: Jazz sign former Jayhawk Withey to multi-year deal

The Utah Jazz have signed free agent center Jeff Withey to a multi-year contract.

The team announced the deal Monday but details weren’t released.

The 7-foot, 235-pound former Kansas Jayhawk was a second-round pick of the Trail Blazers in 2013 and played two seasons with New Orleans after a trade that sent Robin Lopez to Portland. Withey averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 95 games over two seasons.

Withey adds frontcourt depth behind starters Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors along with backups Trevor Booker, Trey Lyles, Tibor Pleiss, Jack Cooley and Grant Jerrett.

The Jazz finished the season 38-44 and had the sixth-best win percentage (.
