The Kansas football team will be paying tribute to the Greatest Generation this Saturday.
As part of its annual “Salute to Service” game, KU will wear special uniforms that recognize the students and faculty who served in World War II.
Here are some of the key features of the uniforms, according to a news release from the school:
- A patch that says “KU WWII Vet” on the front of the jersey
- A patch of the school’s World War II Memorial Campanile on the back of the jersey
- The jerseys have a striped blue-and-red shoulder pattern that was worn by the Jayhawks football team in the 1940s
- The font for the word Jayhawk is an homage to ones used on the planes in the war
- The jerseys are white and light gray, which mirrors the color of the fighter planes
- KU’s helmets have the 1941 Jayhawk logo over a sheet metal texture that also is a tribute to World War II planes
- The team’s pants are a solid blue and include a white KU — in the which is the same font used on the 1941 Jayhawk — on the right hip
The KU football team announced showed off the uniforms in a short video at the Campanile:
