KU football missing one key element of passing offense

LAWRENCE — It’s consecutive plays from last game — first quarter, Kansas leading 10-7 against Memphis — that Kansas offensive coordinator Rob Likens thinks about most.

The setup was there. KU’s running game and quick passing attack had worked. Memphis had went to a Cover 2 defense, which has a strength of stopping the run and covering underneath zones.

The coverage’s weakness, though, is that there is an opening down the middle with the two safeties covering the two outside zones.

And Likens was ready to exploit it.

On second-and-13, KU quarterback Montell Cozart dropped back, had a clean pocket, and delivered a deep ball over the middle to tight end Ben Johnson, who had Memphis linebacker Shareef White beaten by a step for a potential huge gain.
