LAWRENCE — Kansas coach David Beaty warned reporters something like this might happen during his first game-week news conference Tuesday. He highlighted one player during practice and stressed how crucial locking him up on defense was.
Beaty was right, but the defense couldn’t stop him.
Jake Wieneke, a 6-foot-4 sophomore wide receiver, took advantage of KU’s defense in South Dakota State’s 41-38 victory Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Wieneke burned KU (0-1) with eight catches for 160 yards and two scores.
“I was telling coach (KU defensive coordinator Clint Bowen) before the game that he can play anywhere,” Beaty said.
