KU basketball's shortest player leads team in defensive rebounds

LAWRENCE — Frank Mason was only two steps past halfcourt when the 3-point shot was hoisted by Loyola’s Tyler Hubbard.

When coach Bill Self talks about his admiration for Mason, this is the type of play he’s talking about. Typically, 5-foot-11 point guards aren’t asked to hustle back for the sole purpose of cleaning up the defensive glass.

Yet here Mason was early in the second half Tuesday, running straight back to the rim, elevating in the middle of the lane and outjumping a pair of Loyola players for the rebound to give KU possession.

“We’ve got some decent block-out guys, but not guys that just attack the ball,” Self said.
