Kansas football team gets verbal commitment from player in Michigan

The Kansas football program has landed a verbal commitment from one of the top athletes in Michigan.

Marquis Smith, a native of Ypsilanti, Mich., committed to Kansas this weekend, according to Rivals.com. Listed at 5 feet 10 and 170 pounds, Smith also held scholarship offers from Indiana, Ball State, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan, among others.

Smith, who is rated as a three-star recruit, has played quarterback in high school. But he is expected to transition to another position at the college level. Despite hailing from Michigan, Smith has Kansas connections. Rod Jones, a former KU and NFL offensive lineman, is an assistant coach at Ypsilanti High School.
