The Vanderbilt defense held Kansas to just 32.3 percent shooting in the first half while taking a 30-26 lead into halftime in the championship of the Maui Invitational.
Kansas senior forward Perry Ellis was scoreless while missing all four of his field goals during the first half. Junior guard Wayne Selden led the Jayhawks with 13 points. KU hit 5 of 10 from the three-point line, scoring 15 of its 26 points from behind the arc.
In the opening minutes, Vanderbilt imposed its will with sheer size and a disciplined defense. The Commodores built a 16-6 lead as the Jayhawks struggled to score over 7-footers Damian Jones and Luke Kornet.
