Former KU thrower Mason Finley earns Olympic bid

A third former Kansas athlete has earned a spot in the 2016 Olympics.

Mason Finley, who was on KU's track and field team from 2010-12 before transferring to Wyoming, won the American discus championship with a throw of 208 feet, 1 inch at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore.

Finley, who lives and trains in Lawrence, wore a KU shirt during Friday's competition. He beat second-place Tavis Bailey by more than six feet.

An eight-time All-America selection at KU, Finley joins former Jayhawks Andrea Geubelle (United States, triple jump) and Daina Levy (Jamaica, hammer throw) as Olympic qualifiers for the 2016 games in Rio.
