Former KU discus thrower Mason Finley overcomes speed bumps to land in Rio

EUGENE, Ore. — In reality, Mason Finley is a guy who works behind the scenes, using his 6-foot-8 frame to do the heavy lifting for community theater presentations in Lawrence.

In his dreams, he plays a 350-pound space alien on the big screen.

“What I really want to do is put on a bunch of makeup and act like an alien or a monster in sci-fi movies,” Finley said.

Theater is secondary to Finley’s other passion, the discus. His talents in that area earned him a spot in the U.S. Olympic Trials, where he stole the show Friday afternoon.
