Former University of Kansas basketball guard Rex Walters has been hired as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, the team announced.
Walters spent last season as head coach of the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Drive of the NBA Development League. He directed the team to a 26-24 record. Prior to joining Grand Rapids, he spent eight seasons as head coach at the University of San Francisco. Before that he spent two seasons as head coach at Florida Atlantic University. Overall he is 157-158 as a college head coach.
“We’re pleased to announce the addition of Rex Walters to our Pistons staff and to name Rob Werdann as head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive,” Stan Van Gundy, Pistons president of basketball operations and head coach, said in a statement.
