Cozart hopes to improve on below-average rushing season

After being announced as KU’s starting quarterback Monday, Montell Cozart expects a tremendous improvement in his running game this season.

Though Cozart is known as a dual-threat quarterback, he had a below-average rushing season last year. The Junior carried the ball 52 times for 63 yards last season, and he’s averaged 2.3 yards per rush in his career at KU. But Cozart’s running game also is something that he worked hard to improve on during camp.

“It’s comfortable now with the zone reads,” Cozart said. “I’ve been watching guys like Marcus Mariota from Oregon a lot. Going through the summer conditioning with coach (Je’Ney) Jackson has helped my speed a lot.
