LAWRENCE — Clint Bowen was thankful David Beaty had left the room. The Kansas football defensive coordinator didn’t want to embarrass his boss.
Bowen had just started his speech to a group of Topeka supporters at a Feb. 17 banquet at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center. By that point, Beaty had finished his own sales pitch and left the function to attend a prior commitment.
Soon after his address started, Bowen sent the crowd of around 200 into a bit of a frenzy with one ringing, borderline-profane endorsement.
“We finally have somebody,” Bowen said, “who gives a (crap) about our program and about Kansas.
